Howard, Stuttering John, and Jay Leno
On Wednesday’s episode of the Howard Stern Radio Show, Howard started off the show talking about how he was quoted in the newspaper in an article about Howard and Stuttering John. It all started when Stuttering John was on an online radio show and said that he was unsure whether or not he was going with Jay Leno the his new show. John is the announcer for The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, but Jay is moving to another show after Conan O’Brien takes over The Tonight Show in a few months. A few days ago, Howard said on his show that if he found out that Jay did not bring Stuttering John to his new show and left him hanging without a job, he would offer to let him stay in California and do his old gig- asking celebrities questions on the red carpet. After Howard said this, a major newspaper picked up the story, but tried to slant it to make it seem that Howard didn’t like John and was saying bad things about him. I think that Howard was actually being commendable and offering John his old job back, even after he already burned Howard by leaving to the Tonight Show without even saying anything until a few weeks before he left.
But, I think Howard is being a little hypocritical because he is in a similar situation with his whole staff. Howard is nearing the end of his contract and has about 20 months left until he renegotiates a new deal or leaves forever. And Howard says all the time that he doesn’t know if he is going to want to sign a new deal. If he doesn’t make his mind soon, he will be leaving his whole staff hanging without knowing whether they have a job in the future. And especially with the state of the economy at the current time, this can be especially scary. If they aren’t going to have a job in a year and a half, they need to start thinking about what they are going to do. Many of the people on his staff have been there for a long time and would be hard pressed to find another job without much notice. Howard not everybody has $500 million in the bank to fall back on. Think about the other people who will be left jobless with no notice.
